Clan Blair is an armigerous clan which means that the clan, family or name is registered with the Court of the Lord Lyon, but does not currently have a chief recognised by the Lyon Court. The term “Blair” is the genitive of a gaelic word, “Blar ” meaning field or battle field.Blair is probably of Norman origin or from a barony near Upall, West Lothian. There is a document witnessed by Stephen de Blare 1204 for the monastery of Arbroath.Blair Castle was the seat of the Blair Clan for more than 800 years, however it is now called Blair House, not to be confused with Blair Castle in Blair Atholl. The first part of the Castle was built around 1105, but further extensions were added in the 1200’s, 1600’s and 1800’s. Blair House is one of the oldest mansions in Scotland to be continuously inhabited. The house is now available to rent out for large parties or private functions.
