Allison is a sept of Clan MacAlister, whose current chief is William St John Somerville McAlester of Loup and Kennox, Chief of the Name and Arms of MacAlister.There are the usual doubts around the origins of the name Allison, however it is thought that the Scottish name derived from MacAlister and the name is also known to be a sept of the MacDonald clan. The MacAlisters descend from Alasdair Mor, a younger son of Donald of Islay, founder of Clan Donald and great-grandson of King Somerled.
